A Skyscraper on a Cliff

This is a high resolution TEM image of Si-W-O whisker crystal. The micrograph was recorded after heating silicon particles attached on a tungsten heater and growing the crystal in an environmental chamber built in the microscope. The whisker standing on silicon oxide reminds us of a skyscraper in large cities.
1st prize. At 54th photo contest hosted by the Japanese Society of Electron Microscopy in 1998.
