Hitachi High-Technologies Recognized by METI
as an Outstanding Patent Strategy Company

Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation (President: Hidehito Obayashi) (TOKYO:8036) was named a recipient of the “Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry's Commendation (Outstanding Patent Strategy Company)” as part of the fiscal 2008 “Excellence in Intellectual Property Awards” granted by the Japan Patent Office, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on April 6, 2009. The award ceremony will take place on April 17, 2009, at the Kazankai Hall (Kasumigaseki Common Gate), Tokyo.

We are delighted and honored to be recognized because:

• The Company develops, manufactures and markets cutting-edge products in the electronic devices and life sciences segments and maintains a leading position worldwide in semiconductor manufacturing equipment (CD-Measurement SEM), clinical analyzers and DNA sequencers.
• The management team pays keen attention to intellectual property (IP). A monthly IP meeting is conducted by the President and CEO to review and supervise IP status. In addition, the Company has a three-pronged structure that integrates business strategies, R&D strategies and intellectual property strategies, with the Executive Committee responsible for examining IP policies. Engineers engaged in R&D also demonstrate an intrinsic awareness of intellectual property which reflects pride in individual contributions to creating the world's best products.
• Hitachi High-Technologies uses thorough analysis of its own and others' patents to help “visualize” R&D roadmaps and to clarify its IP strategies. Through flagship patent activities (patent generation activity at the core of key business fields) and patent portfolio activities (i.e., patent cultivation), the Company is developing a powerful patent network delineated by patent holder and product. Recognition and incentive systems are also in place to raise IP awareness among all employees.

Hitachi High-Technologies promotes its flagship patent activities and IP programs in close collaboration with the Intellectual Property Group and research laboratories of Hitachi, Ltd. The management views intellectual property as a vital asset, and works proactively to utilize and enhance the value of the Company's intellectual property.
